Problem: Windows 7 search not working. When you type in the search box either incorrect results or no results are displayed, even though you know that there are files there.
Possible Cause: If you’ve encountered this problem on your PC, we believe it is a windows permissions problem.
Resolution: This solution fixed our issue…..
Step 1 – Reset Permissions on your own folder
- Find c:\Users folder in ‘Computer’ and Right click on a users name and choose ‘Properties’.
- Click the Securities Tab and click ‘Advanced’.
- Select ‘Owner’ tab along to top and choose ‘Edit’.
- Select your own name from the list (default should say SYSTEM) and tick the box to say ‘replace owner on subcontainers and objects’.
- Click Apply.
- Close all windows.
Step 2 – Check your index settings
- Click your start button/orb and in the search pane type folder options and hit enter.
- Click on the search tab – settings should look like this:

- Check your settings match these and click apply and OK.
Step 3 – Modify what is being searched
- Click your start button/orb and in the search pane type ‘indexing options‘ and hit enter.
- Make a note of how many items have been indexed, so you can check again afterwards, that it is increased.

- Click “modify” and check all items you want to be able to search in and click “ok”.
- Click “advanced“.
- Click the file types tab
- Check the : index properties and file contents box.
- Click the index settings tab,
- Click ‘rebuild‘. click OK.
- Exit all windows.
- Restart your computer and give it ten or twenty minutes to rebuild the index. You should see considerably more items in the ‘Indexing Options’ screen shown above after the rebuild has been effective.
